English Dance

John Playford, from London, issued the book „The Dancing Master” describing dances done by the aristocracy in 1650.

It was reissued with additions and changes up to 1728. Several other publishers like Walsh, Thomson and others also issued books of English dances. The dance style also became popular with the general public and has remained active until today. The style spread to France and then back to England over the following 300 years and is danced today in England, USA, Australia, Holland, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland. During this time the dance creation has also remained active and new dances, in the same style, are being created in England, USA, Australia, Holland and Belgium
